Driving games have always been my favourite type of computer game and it’s not always the prettiest games that are the best. I first played TrackMania 2 or 3 years ago if I’m remembering correctly, and it was fun but still a bit crude. Firstly it was great because it reminded me a lot of, one of my all time favourite games, 4D Sports: Driving which had similar track items and track editors but way earlier. It also must have been one the best early on-line multi-player games out there. Playing it now and they have certainly improved it. I have to thank Greg Wood for mentioning the game to me again because I have spent hours trying to complete the challenges in single player let alone on-line.
The game works well because there are many different aspects to the driving and it’s not just hold accelerate and steer all the time, you really have to think about how to lower your times around certain tracks and re-think what you are doing. I’ve just spent about an hour trying to get the gold medal on track C09 in single player mode and finally I have done it, I’m so relieved I needed to write something. I even beat the track author’s time and got some special medal. Bonus!
You’re never too old for this shit.
You can play this game free by installing Steam from Valve, the makers of Half-Life.
